MENLO PARK, Calif., Sept. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert Half Legal, a legal staffing and consulting services firm, and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA), an organization that advances the hiring, retention and promotion of diverse attorneys in legal departments and the law firms that serve them, have named Yelena Bosovik as the Robert Half Legal Scholar and member of MCCA's Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program, Class of 2016. She will receive an award of $10,000 to use toward law school tuition expenses in addition to the opportunity to work with MCCA leaders and mentors as she prepares for her legal career.
An immigrant from Ukraine in 1999, Bosovik is currently a student at the University of Missouri School of Law. She graduated magna cum laude from Drury University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics. During her undergraduate studies, she served as editor-in-chief for the university's independent student newspaper and as a legal assistant at a law firm in Springfield, Missouri.
Bosovik developed an interest in the legal profession while working for two years during college as an editorial intern at a local electric power generation cooperative. "In that position, I witnessed the importance of legislation in shaping policy and helping companies survive in a world of increasing regulations," she explained, adding that she plans to pursue a career in corporate law with a focus on tax policy. Bosovik also aspires to serve as an elected official on the state or national level to advocate for the interests of families, women and children and to help "others stand up for their beliefs and values and achieve their dreams." In that way, she says, she will be able to pass on the considerable generosity she's experienced in this country during the past several years.
"Yelena's exceptional leadership and communication abilities, combined with her passionate commitment to law and community service, are a strong foundation for her future success in the legal profession," said Charles Volkert, executive director of Robert Half Legal. "We are pleased to partner with MCCA to help advance the academic and professional careers of outstanding law students like Yelena."
Joseph K. West, MCCA President and CEO, added, "We are deeply honored to recognize Yelena as the recipient of the MCCA Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship. She is one of our emerging leaders in the field of law and her remarkable achievements as a legal scholar and passionate advocacy for diversity are truly inspirational."
Open to U.S. citizens interested in a corporate law career, MCCA's Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program provides financial support for first-year law students who are pursuing a Juris Doctor degree. Program recipients receive a $10,000 award for the first year of law school, with an opportunity to qualify for additional funding in each of the two following years of their law studies. In addition, MCCA offers mentoring opportunities for scholarship recipients and helps place them in paid internship positions with corporate law departments during the summer immediately following successful completion of their first year of law school. Each scholarship recipient also receives ongoing professional development.
MCCA was founded in 1997 to advance the hiring, retention and promotion of diverse attorneys in legal departments and the law firms that serve them. MCCA accomplishes its mission through publishing, research and training, pipeline initiatives and networking. MCCA's work has been recognized with awards from the National Minority Business Council, Inc., the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National LGBT Bar, and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
